Eden-Monaro is Barilaro's 'seat to lose'
The Eden-Monaro by-election is John Barilaro’s to lose, Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says. Outgoing Labor MP Mike Kelly on Thursday announced his retirement from parliament sending voters in the New South Wales electorate to a by-election. Mr Clennell said the NSW Nationals leader began scoping out the federal political switch in January, lobbying Premier Gladys Berejiklian to appoint him as bushfire recovery minister in an effort to boost his profile in the area. “It is not a coincidence John Barilaro lobbied to become minister for bushfire recovery,” he said. “Last year he told Gladys Berejiklian he believed Mike Kelly was going to retire and wanted to run for the seat. “This has been a long time in the planning." The by-election is set to be a three-cornered contest between Liberal, Labor and National candidates.
