Chinese ambassador's threat 'extraordinary'
Senator Kimberley Kitching says China’s economic threat should not be taken lightly as Australia continues its bipartisan push for an inquiry into the handling of COVID-19. Chinese ambassador Cheng Jingye on Monday issued a strong warning that Australia could face an economic hit if it continues to pursue the inquiry. Ms Kitching said it was hard to read his comments as anything other than a threat. "I think ambassador Cheng’s comments … are extraordinary and I don’t think they should be taken lightly,” she told Sky News. "I think it’s hard to read them as anything but a threat as Australia continues to push for an independent inquiry into the origins of this coronavirus then the economic consequences that will be brought against us will be dire."
