Australia stands firm on probe despite threat of 'economic coercion'
The government has declared it will not give in to coercion after China threatened economic retaliation for Australia’s pandemic probe. A boycott from China could cost the economy billions but Labor and the government have said they will back down despite Beijing’s backlash. On Monday Chinese ambassador Cheng Jingye warned Australia could face a boycott on luxury products and education if the probe were to go ahead. Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Secretary Frances Adamson on Monday evening called the Chinese ambassador to personally voice Australia’s alarm.
